I’d forgotten all about this beautiful song, by Leonard Cohen and Jennifer Warnes until I heard it sung today. I spent sometime in New York City in the spring of 1969. Some how during my time there I ended up in an old back room of some loft, with the big windows along one wall and bare brick, like some of the scenes out of Fame. Anyway the room resonated with ghosts of theatre artist, redolent with their triumphs and disappointments and their music and dance seemed to vibrate off the walls.
I can’t remember now exactly how I came to be in that room with maybe three or four other people and Leonard Cohen and Amanda Ambrose. One of those things that can only happen in New York City. In the room was an old beat up piano, and I can’t remember now who sat at the keyboard, and they played and sang to us for about 30 magical minutes.
So when ever I hear something with the magic of Leonard Cohen that wonderful memory comes back to me.
I hope you find inspiration in this beautiful song, performed by Aaron Neville – linda ronstadt.
