As some of Nick’s readers may remember, Maggie started a farming project last year. Well guess what?? We are up to our necks again this year. We were so excited about getting started, what to plant, getting our hands dirty, aching muscles etc!! now, a few weeks into the season we’re really excited. Yes we did expand somewhat. It is almost like an addiction. You just have to buy more. Just not one of us, we all seem to be carrying the “buying “gene. So consequently I planted my heart out!! My friends at the farm are also cleaning up an old antique seeder so I won’t have to bend over so much. !!!Wow just too thoughtful.
We did lose a few tomatoes to the late frost but the “tomato guy” found more and we replaced them. We’re trying some heirloom varieties this year so will keep you posted on how well they produce. We didn’t have to worry about planting potatoes this year as our friends rented their fields and we are surrounded by rows of them. I’m sure they won’t miss a few come fall!!! I know you’ll keep that info under your hats!!! Our new veggie rows this year are parsnips, carrots and runner beans, one bed of cucumbers and one of zucchini. The rest is tomatoes and the usually crops. Okay I have to confess I did plant some flowers. My in-town lot just does not get a lot of full sun to grow some plants well, so out to the farm they went. The sweet peas and dahlias are doing really well. I’ve even taken out some extra day lilies and cannas. We all know how quickly they multiple. Maggie has found her resting spot again, almost on top of the peppers!! and still checks out everything before relaxing and getting a little shut eye. I think in her heart she has a country soul. Maybe animals also have that earth connection too .Anyway you “slice” it, all three of us are happy when we turn onto that road and head south.
Last week as an added bonus we spotted a doe and fawn at the edge of a grain field. The fawn was quite small and still had all his spots. Maggie’s nose and ears were both twitching. She knew they were there and didn’t make a sound. We sat and watched the two of them for 10 minutes before Mum decided we were too close for comfort and they moved back closer to the bush. The “tomato” guy has a new digital camera so we now have a lovely picture to finish off the day. As we head back home at the end of the day, the sunsets have been incredible. We may even stop and have a picnic on our way home. Maggie loves those. She gets to have treats and do more exploring. Why wouldn’t the three of us be content, life was perfect.
Editor’s Note
Buried in Produce will probably be Susan’s next update. She can catch us up with the how the season went.
While I was home earlier this year I had the opportunity to go out to the “Farm” and see the veggie garden which is more like a big field. The spot is truly beautiful. The setting communicates. The silence is deep and loud. A place to sit and allow the silence in.
