Saturday Book Review
Way Of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman
This book, first published in 1980, almost thirty years ago continues to inspire all that read the story of Socrates Dan’s spiritual guide on an incredible voyage of self discovery. Thirty years ago the book may have been a little before it’s time but today with the a resurgence in spiritual self discovery, the book should achieve new success.
This book read better than many thrillers. From the first page, the tale of Socrates and Dan consumed me. On a 5 hour flight from Vancouver to Toronto I devoured the book. I sighed,I cried, and I cheered as Dan struggles to find his awakening.
Dan a college student and world champion athlete who should be delighted with his world finds he is troubled by grim dreams, and a life that feels empty and unfulfilled. My “accident†one night, unable to sleep,†he wanders into an old gas station and meets Socrates , a man destined to lead him to his full awakening.
Dan finds himself draw to Socrates in spite of his strange ways and manner. There his spiritual journey begins.
Early on Socrates tells Dan, “What is important is what lies beyond names and beyond questions.â€
One of Dan’s first lessons is an exercise to get Dan to understand “here†and “now†themes Socrates continues to come back to until Dan really understands.
I had many ah-ha moments reading the book, and often they help me understand a passage from “A New Earth†by seeing the same idea put in slightly different language.
Here is one of those passages that put things into vivid detail for me:
“You ‘fell’ from grace when you began thing, about— when you became a namer and a knower. It’s not just Adam and Eve, you see, it’s all of us. The birth of the mind is the death of senses—it’s not that we eat an apple and get a little sexy!â€
The book has since been made into a movie that covers part of the timeline in the book.
I highly recommend this book. It will go on my shelf way up there near the top.
