A Book Review:

People know I love books and love to read. So quite often people gift me books to read. A surprising number of times those books are excellent and I am enriched by the gift.

I didn’t think that would be the case when I received Stephanie Meyer‘s The Host: A Novel from a friend’s mother. She had passed it along because she didn’t like science fiction. I saw at once it was written by the author of the The Twilight Saga Complete Collection. Having been turned off by the whole Ware wolf obsession I ignored this book for awhile.

Fortunately curiosity finally forced me to open the book. I intended to read only until I was certain that it wasn’t worth my time or effort. That was the last time I raised by head from the world Stephenie Meyer builds in this taunt, compelling and very inspiring book.

First things first…the book is a page turner. Once you are involved with the story you are in hook line and sinker till the very last page. One of the reasons for this is the compelling character of  “the host” Wanderer . Wanderer is  from an alien race that takes over the bodies of various alien civilizations where they reside as hosts robbing these beings of their awareness. However on earth things are going quite to plan. In the case of Wanderer, her  human host Melanie, frights back, refuses to wade into oblivion.

The major part of the story is how these two personalities grow and adapt to each other. But it is no way as simple as all of that.

Wanderer is truly a compassionate being, non violent, and totally unable to inflict pain on another. As  Melanie and Wanders relationship deepens they begin to share a love for another human being named Jared.

What ensues is the most unexpected and brilliant story of love and it’s power to overcome even the most insurmountable barriers to win out over all the base emotions within all of us. Wanderer is helped along with a cast of the most amazing human beings you are ever going to meet as they two struggle with Melanie’s possession.

This is an emotional wringer of a story. While  the drama in the story is tense and builds through out, Meyer builds the tensions by her deep and detail exploration of the emotions of all the players involved. And as you read your wonder and your admiration for the sheer force of this story grows.

More importantly your emotional connection to this frail, fragile alien host, who is almost saint like in her convictions, grips you, holds you tight and doesn’t let you breath easily until the very end of the story.

I was totally unprepared for the scope of the story or  for its huge emotional impact on me.

This is also a story of our all too human ability to hate but also our amazing ability to rise above even the most horrific situations to conquer that hate and replace it with a deeply felt love.

I will guarantee this story will move you on levels you never thought possible. You we be caught in the web of this world, you will be held tight beythe storm of emotions that swirls about you as you read.

This is not really science fiction…but it is a truly warm story of compassion and passion that brings all of us to higher ground emotionally and spiritually.

You will be inspired.

Until we meet again

That looks like an interesting read. Like you, I am not really a fan of the Twilight Series (I find it too overhyped); to read a Stephanie Meyer novel that does not touch vampires and werewolves seems a fresh breathe of air.

  5. Hi Tatyana, As you can see from my review I was very impressed. I have no idea about the twilight series, except that they are a huge success. They are making a movie from the book HOST, I have my fingers cross. Not sure a movie can properly deal with the tense emotional drama of the book. Thanks for your comments.

  6. Don’t get me started on the whole Twilight saga… it certainly wasn’t all it was hyped up to be. But as for this book, I will have to give it a try as I love stories that suck you in and make you want to read the entire thing until you are done. Now, I have something to do this weeked – thanks :)
