Hope you had a great weekend!
Let’s start the week off right with a quote:
Finding the center of strength within ourselves is in the long run the best contribution
we can make to our fellow men.
Source: Rollo May
I watched this woman from Joplin Missouri on CNN the other night as she searched through the rubble of her
mother’s home, looking for something she could take to her mother as a memento as a way of saying that
“all was not lost”. The woman work methodically picking amid the ruins, until she found a doll from her mother’s collection.
When asked what she was going to do now, she simple said, “we start to rebuild. We’re all alive, thank the lord, and that’s the most important thing. All this,” she said pointing to the rubble all around her… this can be replace.”
She had found her center of strength which allowed her to calmly step forward into her uncertain future with
a cheerful voice and rock steady attitude that inspired me and I am sure all the people around her.
But do we have to be tested by adversity to find that center of strength within us? For some, sleep walking through life it sometimes takes a jolt like the calamity of a tornado, to bring that center of strength to the fore. Yet, that center is always there, always has been, waiting for you to discover its presence.
If you are conscious, working on job number one, which is you, then chances are, “the work” would have brought you face to face with that center of strength already.
It is not an ordinary activity to seek, to push oneself to improve, to get up early to meditate,
or stay up late to practice a skill,it is extraordinary to do these things.
To persevere when all around you are lazing on the coach watching TV, or partying until the
cows come home, means that you have had to call on that center of strength, time and time again,
to say on the path to continue “the work”.
We are all, each one of us, richer that another is doing “the work.”
Celebrate with them and with yourself…you are extraordinary and a
center of strength not just for yourself but for all of those around you.
Sometimes we belittle our efforts, but really…thank you for helping to make this world just a little bit safer,
a little bit saner, one small accomplishment at a time.
With Love
Nick
