My Favorite Character: Ego
Here are some simple exercises to help you increase your awareness and to bring you into the present moment.
1. Observational Walking
This is best done outside, but in a pinch you can do this inside. The idea is to spot objects you see on your walk and observe:
- Their form. Take a close hard look at the whole form.
- Become aware of the space that form occupies in space.
- Get a feel, or imagine, just how much weight, or how heavy that form is.
Use very different objects for this exercise. The contrast between forms, for instance a tree and a feather. As you do this exercise and really focus on it… the external world will slowly disappear and you will come fully into the moment.
2. Brief Deep Breathing
This is a great exercise to do if you find yourself being distracted or unfocus and drifting off into the past or future situations. You can do this just about anywhere. Not recomment when operating heavy equipment like driving a car.
Sit comfortably, back straight. Put your hands on your stomach. Take a deep slow breath counting slowly to five on the inhale. Hold and count one, then exhale counting backward from 5. Hold on the exhale and count one then inhale again counting to 5. So inhale to 5 hold on 1, exhale on five, hold on 1. Do this five to ten times, or until you find yourself calming and your focus returning to the present moment. This is a great exercise to do first thing in the morning and the last thing before going to bed.
Let me know how you do with these.
