New Home, New Hope: Family in Uganda Looks Ahead
Editor’s Note
Heifer International is an aid organization I fully support. The work they do to bring individuals and families to a level of sustainability is truly unique. By provided farm animals and teaching the recipients how to care and manage their new resource they offer practical solutions, one on one to these families. More important still, these people develop a sense of pride and independence and an ability to manage their own lives.
Below is a copy of the Heifer international newsletter I receive once a month and thought it would be good to share these uplifting stories with you.

Learning extends far beyond the walls of the typical classroom in most Heifer projects. Whether teaching African families chicken management or showing the importance of caring for the Earth to school children in the United States, Heifer draws upon more than 65 years of experience in sustainable development.
For many communities, Heifer animals and training are the springboard to sustainability. Take the cooperative of coffee farmers in Chiapas, Mexico, for instance. Heifer and Green Mountain Coffee are supporting this community as they struggle to maintain food security during the “thin months,” when income from coffee production is severely reduced. Pigs, rabbits, fruit trees and other gifts are empowering these farmers to even further development. It’s an inspiring partnership, vividly captured by a correspondent for The Economist in a multi-part series online.
And, speaking of not missing compelling stories, make sure you read Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s article “Saving the World’s Women” that appeared in this Sunday’s New York Times magazine. Tererai Trent, featured in the article, credits Heifer for her rise from poor cattle herder in Zimbabwe to Ph.D. candidate.
Clearly, Heifer’s model for sustainability starts with animals and training then builds on the passion and potential of the communities we serve. It makes for a great story … one that you make possible and one that we’re happy to share.
Yours for a Better World,
Ashley Michael

Heifer Gifts Bring Opportunity to Africa
As a young girl, Beatrice Biira dreamed of an education; a Heifer goat made that dream possible. Now, follow Beatrice back to her home country of Uganda, where she finds Heifer continuing to give children the same opportunities that dramatically changed her life. Watch this video and see how one of Heifer’s greatest successes is finding her own way to Pass on the Gift.
Chicken Education Hatches New Ideas
In Tanzania, chickens weren’t the livestock of choice for family farmers. Hatch rates were poor, and local hens produced few chicks. Then Heifer offered training on chicken management and coop building. Now, chickens are hatching new hope for families.
In His Own Words: Passing on the Gift in Peru
After receiving training from Heifer, David Condori-Aquino has seen tremendous improvement in his alpaca herd. Not only are his alpacas now providing income for his family, but his community has been able to Pass on the Gift to other families in need as well. In this piece, he shares his story about how Heifer has helped his family.

Heifer Featured in The New York Times
This past Sunday’s New York Times magazine featured the story of Tererai Trent, who credits Heifer for her rise from poor cattle herder in Zimbabwe to Ph.D. candidate. The article written by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn tells the stories of five oppressed women from various parts of the world and is adapted from their forthcoming book “Half the Sky.”
The Economist Covers Coffee From Tree to Cup
Follow as a correspondent on Economist.com covers a recent trip to Chiapas, Mexico, where Heifer and Green Mountain Coffee have partnered to provide support to a local coffee farming cooperative. For this group, food insecurity is a major issue during the “thin months” when income from coffee production drops. This fascinating series began Monday, so make sure to catch up — maybe over some fair-trade coffee?
