Simple Flavors

One of my goals this year is to simplify. Simplify everything, live more simply, eat more simple foods, take greater pleasure in simple things.

Which leads me to this amazing moment having lunch today.

You might think me crazy for talking about this, but this harks back to a quote by Thich Nhat Hanh. Here’s the reference: Drinking Tea. In the quote he suggests that when we drink tea, that is all we should do is drink tea; to focus completely on drinking tea.

Back to my lunch. For several days now I have been eating a lunch consisting of one half of an apple, a stalk of celery, a slice of what ever cheese I had at hand. Today I also had a few cherry tomatoes that have been ripening to perfection for over a week now in my veggie basket and a few oil cured black olives.

I ordered up my usual cup of americano but made sure is it was in a real cup instead of the land-filling throw-aways. Most Starbucks do this if you ask.

I had nothing on my mind accept enjoying the simple pleasure of my meal: The tomatoes were little explosions of flavor. The Olives drenched with sensation for the taste buds, the apples and the cheese so beautiful together and the celery, cleaning and fresh.

The coffee tasted no less than brilliant, the flavor undiminished by the slightly off hint of paper.

I carry my own cloth napkin, my own stainless cutlery.

The end result: Nothing for the landfill, a few olive pits for my compost, and a calorie light meal.

So way am I talking about this?

Living in the moment, “The Now” really does heighten awareness and enjoyment.Today I stayed in the moment successfully all through lunch. Wonderful.

I am not a guru, I have not achieved enlightenment, but I believe with a little practice everyday, we can get there.

Action is required. The wrong thing to do is nothing.
