Five Ways to Slow Down and Smell the Roses

(c) by Nick Grimshawe

We live in a high speed society. Faster is better. Slow is a reason for dismissal.

The leisure society which arrived with so much promise a few decades ago never saw the light of day.

The long slow summers of yester year fade from the memories of those of us old enough to remember.

We run our maze like well trained mice doomed to chase an ever dwindling spiral of time.

What can be done?

First, begin by understanding that you cannot change the world with a single step. Don’t do anything drastic until you can smell the roses.

Take small little steps until you regain a sense of equilibrium. When you feel common sense filtering back into your time management worksheet, then you will have time to consider bigger decisions.

Here are Five Small Steps You Can Take to Slow Down and Smell the Roses.

1. Keep an arrangement of flowers in your house at all times. Make buying your bouquet one of those joyful quiet little moments in your harried life. Then stop to smell the flower once each morning before you rush out of the house, and once again when you get back home. This gives you a structure to follow which acts as a reminder to stop and smell the flowers.

2. Meditate…  “What! Where am I going to find time to do that?”…ten minutes a day. Put the time in you day-timer (oh my god you’ve got it bad don’t you?) so you have a reminder. Find a quiet place, close your eyes, and listen to your breath. Morning, noon, or night it matters not, just that you take a moment to connect with the eternal quiet of the universe.
Smell the Roses

3. Eliminate bad news vehicles: Television, Newspaper and Radio. My newspaper subscription expired when I changed my credit card. For at least two weeks I felt lost without that daily dose of news. But then the magic happened. Instead of news I read inspirational books at breakfast and found myself in a more tranquil state. Then on impulse one day I turned off the car radio. What a liberating moment. Now when I drive I just drive, enjoying the scenery without some traffic reporter, buzzing around in a helicopter, telling me about all the disasters ahead. The information really makes no difference and my commutes are peaceful, less harried.

4. Turn on the cruise control and use the slow lane. You will get there in the same time surprisingly enough, more rested less harried and more composed. You will not feel as rushed. Plus your fuel costs will go down adding a nice extra bonus to slowing down.

5. Outsource. Take a long hard look at your schedule and find one task you can get someone else to do. My favorite example is lawn mowing. There is bound to be a neighborhood teen looking for some extra spending money. You get the lawn mowed, get more time, and aid an economically underprivileged teenager. Be creative with this process. Eliminate one task each week for a month.
Smell the Roses

I have more but culture shock can set in if you slow down too quickly. Remember the idea is to eliminate speed. Don’t make matters worse by rushing to slow down.

Ah! I think I am beginning to spy another law of inverse logic.

Take a deep breath, let it out slowly. That’s right, good. Now go smell the roses.

I’d love to hear from you what steps you are taking to slow down the pace of your life, or have you just given in?

Five Ways to Slow Down and Smell the Roses | Beautiful Summer Morning…

We live in a fast paced society with an every dwindling spiral of time. How can you reverse the affects of this fast paced life? I give five suggestion which can begin the process. Each action is simple, doesn’t consume much time and will bring you to…

I like to go for a walk every day and look at all the lovely gardens. You don’t see this when driving in a car.
I take my cat out for a short time and stay with her as she explores.
I always look at the sunset every night as it is always different and so relaxing. Sunrise is also a great time.

I very much enjoyed reading your site. Candles, Flowers, lighting etc change the atmosphere in your home. The colors and auroma affect our peace of mind.

May I suggest that a leisure walk in the woods, around your block, or a long walk to the store via the back of the parking lot give one time to slow down and enjoy the journey. Who ever said we had to park close to the store and run in. We should not have to watch our watch as we take a leisure walk. Determine to see all you can see and experience all the sounds and sights you can. Leave your watch on the dresser knowing you will get back when you get back.

Thanks Nick for your lovely reminders to take time to smell the roses.

    Hi AnneShirley,

Looks like we have agreement on taking a walk and looking at things. Looking at the sunset, and just plain looking helps us slow down. When we are in a rush we do not see as well. Just think about the way a cat explores new territory.

Thank you for your comments. I invite you back again.

    Hi Mary,

And thanks for taking the time out of your schedule to visit and leave a comment.

I like the idea of leaving the watch behind. On my days off or my holidays I never wear a watch. Time is more flexible when you aren’t watching the second hand tick around.

A walk around the block or in the woods, or anywhere really, do slow us down and give us time to appreciate nature. You don’t see trees wearing watches and they never seem to be in a hurry to do anything.

    Hello Nick,

    Great, thank you!

I already have in my daily practice some of mentioned steps …. but never enough. When one is healthy – all is more important than having time to reflect upon ourselves. When we lose our health – all what is not our pain become relative !!!!! WHY SHOULD WE BE COLLECTORS OF OUR FUTURE PAINS???? IS THAT THE AIM OF OUR BIRTH?

Ah, ALL THOSE VERSES, SOUNDS AND ROSES!

Thank you Nick! Very useful and inspiring.

    Love,

    Branka

I wish more people had this kind of attitude in life. Words of wisdom are hard to find these days. Spread it around some more. We all need it! Forrest.

  • http://beautifulsummermorning.com Nick Grimshawe

    Hi Branka,

Thanks for visiting. Your right of course, we can always do more to slow down and live our lives instead of rushing through them. We stay healthy in part managing stress. What better way to do that than a walk through a park or a forest, or a country lane.

We ignore a peaceful pace at our own peril, and future pain.

    Hi Forrest,,

That’s what I am trying to do, is spread an attitude of inspiration. What better place than find that inspiration in the natural landscapes of this planet, which richly rewards us with its beauty.

But we need to take the time to view that beauty and let it seep into our soul.

The longer beauty seeps into your soul the stronger you become…a little like making tea. You can have it weak, or you can have it strong and flavorful.

    Thanks for commenting.

Nice advice! Those slow-down tips are really inspirational.

I slowed down in 2002 when I voluntarily left my lucrative but stressful paid employment.

I also slow down by finding time to play a few games of Table Tennis everyday.

Moreover, there is no day I don’t set aside some time to watch my favourite programs on the television.

I used to mend a few things like clothes, wash my car, etc. Now, I often ask other people to do them for me, paying them.

All the above and others not mentioned have enabled me to slow down, and have more time for my myself and family.

  • TheGreatStone.com

    Another great posting.
Thank you for doing a great job!

  • http://beautifulsummermorning.com Nick Grimshawe

    Hi Lateef,

I am so happy that you have been able to find the a way to slow down and enjoy the things that are important too you.

I’d offer to play a few rounds of table tennis but I don’t have much skill in that area.

Outsourcing, if you can is a great way to resolve some of those time consuming tasks so you can find the time to be with yourself (very important) and your family.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you again soon.

I’m hoping to have a surprise for all my faithful readers soon.

    Hello Swiftly,

Thanks for commenting and dropping by. I am planning articles on each one of those points in Slowing Down. Flowers are suck beautiful and spiritual things, they can’t help to attract your attention. I think that’s why we have them,
