Book Review: The Shack by William P Young
There are many paths to God. We all find our way (or not) along our own unique path.
The Shack is one of those books, that helps to illuminate the path we are on to god.
Let me digress for a moment. As I read this book, the path I have followed became more vivid and alive for me. I even pin pointed the moment that journey began.
I was in a Sunday School class listening to Reverend Symons read scripture from the Old Testament.
I forget the passage he read from. Somehow from his reading of the text he managed to bridge to
“…so that is why you should not smoke and women should not wear lipstick.”
Up went my hand, almost automatically. “Where does it say that in the text exactly?”
Mr Symons, “You have to read between the lines.”
“Where, the story doesn’t even have anything to do with that! They didn’t even have lip “Stick” back then yet alone tobacco.”
Mr Symons, “Nevertheless, you can interpret from the sense of the text.”
I knew then and there, this was not my path to God. All ready uncomfortable with a judgmental God,
I had no interest in some one sighting Chapter and Verse as justification for their particular agenda.
The Shack is a story of one man’s struggle with the concept of “God ” in the face of gut wrenching tragedy. “How could God allow…?”
The story of Mack and his journey back to “God” is a brilliant heart warming story, that addresses many questions about “God”. The questions and answers take place in a series of conversations, with the various aspects of God.
The book attempts to liberate us from the tyranny of hierarchy, and structure. The “Church” is not the four walls, but a relationship.
The central part of the book is about that relationship and the repairing of that relationship for Mack.
His transformation is dramatic and inspiring.
And as Mack is being transformed, so are you.
While the beautiful, page-turning, story unfolds, you partake in a special dialog which also uplifts your spirit and challenges you perception of God.
The book transcends the debate about whose religious path is right to a conversation with a God who has no concept of institution.
It doesn’t matter what path to god you are on, what counts is the way this book will stretch and challenge you to a new more profound understanding and toward a relationship without power or command.
This book jumps to the top of my inspirational books list.
If like me, you are hesitating to purchase this book, throw those hesitations to the wind, and buy the book.
For anyone on of the Great Wide Way, this is a book that should not be missed.

Book Quote:
I suggest that the only books that influence us are those for which we are ready, and which have gone a little farther down our particular path than we have yet got ourselves. ~E.M. Forster, Two Cheers for Democracy, 1951
