Home of the Heart

Never make your home in a place.
Make your home for yourself inside your own head.
You’ll find what you need to furnish it– memory,
friends you can trust, love of learning and other such things.
That way it will go with you wherever you journey.

We carry our home in our hearts. There are a huge number of homilies about house and home, home sweet home and the rest. Home comes down to one simple thing: home is an idea, a concept, not a thing, a place, or a location in time and space.

I often refer to the farm where we( my sisters and I) grew up and came of age. I think fondly of all the pleasure and fun, and adventure, hurt and pain, that we all experience there. Recently when I went home I took a drive out to the old place with my son, just to give him an idea of the place the family calls home.

When we got there I didn’t find a home, instead I saw a house, a barn, a lawn, but none of those things really mattered. I felt disappointed that reality didn’t fit the memory. Then I realized the physical presence could never match the magic of the heart, that the farm of my imagination expressed the idea of home better than an old farm house, empty of our lives and passion. That home is in my heart as I write to you. In my heart there are many homes, the farm is only one of them. And all those homes are present together in a space that has no measure, and no time.

How profoundly awesome is that?

Does it not sing to the mystery of life itself, that so much can me contained in … well nothing.

Tell me about your home or homes. I’d love to hear from you. Just hit the reply to this email button.

  1. Well, I make my home with Tad Williams – so this resonated all round for me!

Seriously, it is a lovely quotation, and one of the nicest things my best beloved wrote (I don’t think he was entirely aware of it, to tell you the truth, until it started coming back to him in things like Readers Digest, and on the web.)

Thanks very much for writing this and using Tad’s quote. all good wishes, Deborah Beale

  2. Hello Deborah,

Thank you very much for commenting. I am thrilled that you spotted this quote. I wanted to do a quote like this for sometime to match my own experience and I just couldn`t find anything that “resonated” with me.

I am in the business of picking out just the right quote from some one’s work that matches what I am searching for at the time. I am sure there are many writers who miss how beautifully they expressed something with out realizing that some one would end up quoting their words.

    Thanks

    Nick
