The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls
of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and
all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells the
Great Spirit, and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.Source: Black Elk, Oglala Sioux
I love this quote. Black Elk talks about the “first” peace, the most important peace. And in reality all other “peace” is secondary to that first peace.
His words resonate today, as they did in the past. Black Elk was born in 1863.
The common thread of oneness with god runs through most religions, and in fact Black Elk embraced Christianity and saw no conflict between his tribal beliefs and those of Christianity. He embraced both worlds because he embrace the first peace.
If we could all find that connection, even for a moment, the world would be changed.
I have at times felt that connection in a powerful way. When I do my heart is cleansed, and my soul made light.
You can find that connection in the stillness of a moment, of dawn break across the horizon, or a hawk soaring in the quiet air, of the breathless silence deep within a forest, in the babble of a tiny brook, in the music that makes you want to sing.
We have all touched that oneness. We have all known that peace.
For our life, we just need to remain conscious of it.
Find a moment, find a minute , find an hour.
The great spirit is within you: Reach across the divide, and touch forever.
