Lord! when you sell a man a book you don’t sell just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue – you sell him a whole new life. Love and friendship and humour and ships at sea by night – there’s all heaven and earth in a book, a real book.

Book Review

Buddha: A Story of Enlightenment

This is a fictionalized account of the life of Buddha. The book is an easy read, yet captures all the milestones in Siddhartha’s life.

Part one begins with his birth and follows the growth of Siddhartha to manhood in his father’s palace. Due to his father’s desire to see Siddhartha become a ruthless king able to rule his kingdom with a stern hand, the preists warn his father to keep Siddhartha a prisoner.

“If he once sees suffering, your son will never obey you again. You’ll lose hime forever.”

Of course, as Shiddhartha grows his curiousity about the outside grows and he eventually eludes his captors and escapes the castle walls, where his eyes fall on the suffering of his own people.

Part two follows his journey as Gautama, the Monk, and his search for a teacher that will lead him to Enlightenment. His journey leads him to a place in the mountains, and his desperate attempt to reach Enlightment. He almost dies in the attempt and his followers abandon him, thinking him lost to them.

In Part Three after he recovers from his ordeals he finally “Awakens”, and the last chapters in the book follow him as he travels back to his home spreading the message of “Enlightenment.”

If you have not read alot about Buddha this is a great way to begin your journey.

I highly recommend this book to all that wish to know more about one of the most influencial spiritual figures of all time.
