Firsts Steps:
Faith is taking the first step
even when you don’t see the whole staircaseSource: Martin Luther King
I chose this quote because it kicks off a theme I will explore with you this week.
In all things we must take the first step. From the moment as a small child taking that first shaky stumbling step, we must over, and over again, learn to walk. That first moment is always a moment of faith that the whole staircase is there. Without that faith we become crippled by doubt which sucks dry our courage and leaves us immobile, unable to move, let alone ascend the staircase to our destiny.
Children naturally dream. Just listened to them. Ask them what they want to be when they grow up. We start dreaming early. Depending on our environment we learn to take those first step with courage or with fear.
No matter how successful we ultimately become in life, our paths become cluttered with first steps where we failed to get up again and take that next step. For some these failed first step come to dominate their lives, for others they cast shadowing into the light of their success.
To conquer the highest dreams within use I believe we must discover those failed first steps, and then make the effort to take the next step.
I have included a link to the famous Martin Luther Kings speech here, a speech that always moved me to tears, no matter how many times I have viewed it. While racism remains a terrible tragedy in our time, the reason I offer this to you today, is to carry on my analogy of first steps.
Martin Luther King took a courageous first step toward true emancipation for black America.
That first step led to many more first steps. Martin Luther, in spite of evidence to the contrary, believed the staircase to equality existed.
Since Martin Luther King took his first step the world has gone from a vast rural landscape to a small global village.
Martin Luther King, and Mahatma Gandhi ( two of my heroes) worked in a localized arena. Interestingly for both, their success involved a lot of steps, Mr King marched in the street all over America, and Mahatma, walked the length and breadth of India, to carry his message to each isolated village.
Whose first step will bring us a modern day King or Gandhi, who will walk a staircase toward the liberation from the tyranny of war, and intolerance?
Perhaps that first step will be yours.
Or perhaps you will discover an abandoned first step and decided to take that art course,
or write that novel, or volunteer on the food line.
Take time today, to take the next step no matter how small you believe your dream is. Have faith that the staircase is there. Who knows what you might achieve? Who knows where that staircase my lead.
Here is the Video of that speech.
Have a Beautiful Summer Morning,
Nick
