Today, I’m at peace with myself. I know someone who likes to say, “We all need to be gazed upon with love.” As much as we need hugs, or a paycheck or exercise–we need to look across a room and see someone smiling at us, with love in their eyes. It must nourish and sooth the spirit. I had good friends here with me overnight. I gave them dinner and respite on their journey northward. They so filled my spirit with smiles and hugs and loving gazes! I feel a warm sense of well being.

I don’t think most of us get near enough of that, in these hurried times where many people we encounter in a day are harried strangers; and sometimes, harried loved ones, who forget to gaze with love, with approval, forgiveness, or regard, with gentle humor, at the people they most treasure.

I read once that the trouble in the hearts of men, of late, is that they are not smiled at often enough.
Smiles and loving gazes sure feed my soul. I guess we all just want and need reassurance we’re okay, we’re visible, we’re safe, we have value. A smile, a loving look, says all of that.

Versus the honking, frowning, gesturing, and yelling we tend to get on the road; in grocery stores and malls and possibly at work. The hurried walk away, the downcast or averted eyes, the blank stare. What shall we make of the children called to the sides of their anxious parents, if you say hi to a child in a store? Down with honks and frowns! Up, up, with everything we can think of that says, “I see you. You are Enough.” Up, up, with tender regard for the fragile, struggling heart in every human being.

    Up, up, with people.
