What is My Bliss?
By WordBird
What do I most love and where is my place in this world? What is my “Bliss” and where is the path that takes me toward it? I’ve always loved ecology, and the science of nature. But those abilities that come easily to some were harder for me. Dates, calculations, historical timelines, the name or title of just about anything… And so I decided, with my eleven and fifteen year old brain, I must be “bad” at science. I must not be able to do what I loved most.
I think a ton of us do this, or someone does it to us, and we turn away, as youngsters, from the passions we feel. We don’t “follow our bliss” as Joseph Campbell, that incredible guy, liked to say.
I’m thinking of taking a degree in environmental science. I figure I love it so much, the passion will get me past or through the difficulties. Mostly I want to enter and join a community, a place, where I’m with like-minded people, who care about the things I care about. You know that feeling when you ‘re excited about something and SO is someone else!! When you can relax into who you are, and express your interests, and learn and grow and produce and laugh…with people who get it.
Cuz, I like dirt. And bugs. And raccoons. And rain clouds. And the problem of Kudzu. I like thinking about humans as one of the energy forces of life, living among millions of other energy forces, all of us connected, interacting, impacting one another. This complicated, fascinating universe. I like to think about how we, as people, fit, and how we could change so we are better stewards. So we understand our larger impact. Like..how that plastic bag that goes out the window blows into the creek, which flows into the river, which floats in the water, which is eaten by a turtle, who thinks its food, and the turtle will die, and then because he died, other things happen.
On the other hand, how that handful of coffee grounds that goes into the coffee maker, which goes into a basket, which is collected by a community gardener, who puts it in the garden, which feeds the soil, which produces better crops, which are given to the poor in that city area, who grow up stronger and healthier and happier, and do good things.
We have so much power, to impact others, to impact the earth. We have a great need to more deeply connected, with our power, our impact, and our earth.
Last week I went to the library and checked out environmental science books…weather and climate, global warming, ecology basics, invasive plants and animals. (Also, Women and Money! In preparation for Coaches’ Millionaire Mind!)
I need my passions to really become a full part of my everyday life. I will still write. That’s like breathing, for me.
Editors Note:
I am honored to publish this article and the wonderful photo. The author and I are graduate students of “Tools to Life“ an excellent self development course for anyone to take. As we did the course we became friends and began to correspond through the course which also acts a bit like a social network. I saw her wonderful posts and began to gently urge her to write an article for Beautiful Summer Morning. To my delight she has now obliged. I hope you enjoyed the article as much as I.

Dear Kimberly
The picture is fantastic. Where is it? Never mind, somewhere in the heavenly planet we as a species are changing into a bin…
That question of yours “What is my bliss?” can tap into wonders… I’ll give it a try and THANKS for your sharing.
Beatriz
Beatriz,
Kimberly can you jog my memory about where this picture is from? And thanks for your sharing and your comments.

This photo is the Snake River in Idaho. I drove my mom’s truck of belongings from the mid west toward Seattle. It was my first trip through Wyoming, Idaho and Washington. Stunning country. It seems to me I took a wrong turn and ended up down a dead end road, in construction. I stopped to see where I was and how to get out of there, and saw this beautiful canyon. I spent a couple of hours around the Snake River. It’s so stunning.
Thanks Kimberly for giving us a wonderful story to go with the picture. And yes, I must admit that this part of the country the “Pacific Northwest” is stunning.
