Beautiful Summer Morning Book Selection
The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini,
I don’t recall a recent book that moved me on so many emotional levels. The book evokes feeling of genuine sorrow, cheer and a very real horror.
The story of the kite runner moves between Afghanistan and America, during the time just before the Afghanistan Monarch fell and the descent of the country into chaos and war, to the fall of the World Trade Center Towers and the fall of the Taliban regime.
The story follows the life of two boys growing up together in Kabul, and hinges on one moment in Hassan’s life. This moment haunts the pages to the book, tearing wounds into the soul of this young man.
The book gives clear insight in the heart of Afghanistan, and its people and the 3 decades of constant war.
There is a least-we-should-forget quality to the book as well, as we travel with Hassan back into the terror gripped country under Taliban rule. The images and incidents in that journey back to heal his soul are graphic and horrific.
The book is beautifully written in the first person narrative of Hassan. His voice is so persuasive you often forget you are reading fiction and not some first hand account of a real person.
