Gardening Inspirations

Brand Levitra lang=”EN-US”>DIGGING UP THE DIRT

By Susan Heydon

I have to admit I really miss my garden in the winter. Not because I miss the flowers and the colour but because I can’t go out and just sit. I don’t have the luxury of “touring the estate” carrying a cup of tea and just relaxing. Most gardens whether they are big or small become our santuary and help us de-stress from our day. It’s our space to unwind, have a glass of wine and have some quiet time.

Green space is becoming more and more important to us as more and more disappears. Maybe that’s why we enjoy parks, camping, gardens, lakes, trails etc. We all enjoy outdoor activity because it’s exactly that “outdoors”. Gardening just makes it much more personal. It’s also the perfect activity to get in shape( forget the gym). Bending and stretching is free and there is lots of it!!! Weight lifting comes at the end of a wheelbarrow full of soil and manure. No it’s not smelly!! If you manage to last the whole day you have also had your cardio work out. Digging out dandelions relieves stress and all that fresh air and sunshine is a real bonus.

Now after all that, the best part is seeing all the hard work pay off.  Not only are you now 10 pounds lighter but you also have this beautiful garden that you created. The surprise of plants popping up where you didn’t plant them, happens all the time, the plant you thought wouldn’t make it ,survived ,and the one you thought was doing great didn’t. Sorry, gardening isn’t perfect. It tends ( no pun intended) to be like life, full of surprises.

You only have to spend a day in Toronto at the Canada Blooms indoor gardens to see how many of us need that garden fix. People of all ages fill our garden centers, our garden nurseries and the botanical gardens. Places like Stratford , Niagara Falls ,Buchart Gardens in British Columbia are filled with people seeking that earth connection. Almost every country you visit has gardens you can tour. Europe is full of them. Every space available seems to grow something.

Spring is now on our doorstep. Think about decorating your outdoor space instead of your indoor space. Visualize what you want your garden to do for you and then go for it, even if it’s just a deck for your barbecue. Start small and you will be surprised what ideas will grow!!!!
